Niagara Falls, Canada

We drove through Northwest New York to Niagara Falls, Canada for the gorgeous Fall view, to see Richard's grandparents while they were visiting Canada and to see the falls!

Things not to say to Canada Customs OR US Customs...

Canada::

Customs: Why are you coming to Canada?
Jessa: Just to visit!
Customs: I'm going to need you to elaborate. (angry stare)
Jessa: To see the falls. (smile)
Customs: You are only staying one night?
Jessa: Yes, well we are going to see his grandparents.....they are on a bus...
Customs:  (confused look)

Customs: You flew to Buffalo and rented a car?
Jessa: No, we live in the city. Yes, we rented a car.
Customs: You drove all this way for one night.
Jessa: Yes...
Customs: Ok, you can go. (angry stare)

American::

Customs: Citizenship?
Jessa: Yes.
Customs: (Pause...)
Jessa: Oh, United States! (Richard shakes head)

Customs: Where do you live?
Jessa: Ummmm......Dal-New-York

Customs: You only stayed for one night?
Jessa: Yep! We were seeing his grandparents, and the falls, they were on a bus visiting...
Customs: Can you please sit back so I can see him
Richard: (Scoots up and smiles at customs agent)
Customs: Take off your sunglasses . . . Okay, you can go

Pickle and Sundae exploring a new part of New York!
They loved the road trip and we loved having a car!

LOVE the colors of the leaves!
Binghamton, NY - Rod Serling's hometown (creator of the Twilight Zone)!

Maid of the Mist: Niagara Falls, Canada
Funniest part of the ride....a girl from China in her 20's asked Richard to take her picture with the falls behind her....the next thing I knew, she grabbed me and insisted I pose with her because "I nice, I nice, see smile, I nice, I promise!"... I guess my picture is now on her Facebook with a caption "Me and American Girl".

Breakfast with Richard's grandparents in Niagara Falls, Canada.

Niagara Falls with the Maid of the Mist boat heading toward the falls - we were soaked!
It was such a cool experience. Crazy thing we learned...
people have actually fallen over the falls and lived to tell about it.

Living in 450 sq ft - AKA a Texas-sized kitchen.

Many have asked what it is like living in 450 square feet. My typical response to Texans is that it is probably the same size as your kitchen - just creatively squeeze a bed, couch, storage area, desk and tv in there. C'mon - it sounds fun, right?

Things we love: hardwood floors, upgraded appliances, window above the bathtub, high ceilings, kitchen cabinets, when we step out of our apartment we can see the East River and the boats that float it daily, garbage chute is 2 steps from our door

Things that are a challenge: heaters near furniture, small space, super tiny bathroom and very small closets and the gas stove still freaks me out (but Richard loves it), limited counter space in the "kitchen", you cannot leave any open food or trash out b/c mice will come (actually, you cannot even have food in its cardboard packaging)

Fun fact: We live in a pre-war building that was constructed in 1907! Our building is a landmark and occasional tour groups stop by!

Well, if that is hard to imagine . . . here is the grand tour of our 1st apartment in New York City. Our furry little friends are ready to give you the tour.

Meet tour guides - Pickle and Sundae. Woof!

Bathroom

Need to work on communication in your marriage? Share a bathroom the size of ours! We painted the walls green and added the storage unit and towel rack that is shown in picture two - which has proven very helpful. There is a large window above the bath - which I absolutely love! However, hope you don't want to lay all the way down in the tub - it's not long enough! ;)

Bathroom view #2

Entry Way

We were pretty excited to have an entry way (this feature and closets are not always to be had in these apartments....yes, I said closets - thankfully we have 2...although they are like kids' closets). In our entry way, you will notice that it serves as a storage for our winter coats (we added the hangers), we added storage below the jackets for scarves, gloves and hats. We also built a bookshelf to hold (wait for it)....books! Plus jewelry, dog stuff, mail, etc. Picture number 2 shows additional storage we built. The bottom storage holds all my sweaters / sweatshirts and the top unit holds all desk, craft and office related supplies.

Office

Office by day...hidden by night! Amazing, we know. The door you are seeing is our bedroom door...and the chair hibernates under the couch.

Viola! Workspace!

Kitchen

Aka: The other side of the living room! We painted the kitchen purple, added the floating storage (which we also painted purple). We utilize the small space above the cabinets to store all of our photo albums and pictures. You will notice that the cabinets are pretty high - we use the step ladder to the right to access top shelves (you just get used to it). We had to condense our cooking supplies and everything kitchen related, but we seem to have found a system that works so far (and no more kitchen fires - wahoo!). On top of the gas stove, you will see the bright red tea kettle just like in Seinfeld (a must have for Richard). Inside our cabinets everything is organized in air-tight containers - we take everything out of it's original packaging... rodent free is the way to be! Seriously, I can't handle mice and we've already had 2 visit...

the "island" helps to separate the kitchen from the living area

Living Room

AKA the other side of the kitchen. We added white Venetian blinds and the AC unit (doesn't the AC unit just add to the decor? ha!).

In this corner view, you will see Richard's closet hiding in the corner. The heater is located behind the striped chair (interesting fact: you do not control your heat in NYC, your super turns it on/off up/down for you...). The fire escape is also located behind this window.

Bouncing to the opposite corner, you will see the blue accent wall we painted and a
curious Sundae staring at it.

Sundae find our original Craig Thomas artwork intriguing

To help ease clutter with decorations, we (Richard) installed two shelves above the couch. Most of the apartment is Ikea. We had to measure every last inch prior to shopping and we spent approx. 12 hours over 2 weekends at Ikea (which you have to access by ferry).

This fun little guy serves as our table (and ottoman). We bought 2 serving trays, painted them purple and added table mats. When they are not in use, they are stored below the ottoman.

And now Sundae would like to show you her playpen. She is actually sitting on top of Pickle.

Bedroom

Last but not least is our bedroom - the most challenging space of all. Our bedroom is probably the size of most Texans' master closets. Below the window (and directly under the AC) is a heater, and on the opposite end is the closet (my closet). So, the bed can't be too close to the heater (fire!) or too close to the closet (door won't open!). After several months of pushing the bed around the room (it's so small that we couldn't make the headboard fit!)...we finally found the perfect fit...and by perfect, I mean you can't squeeze it any other way! We took all of the paint we used in the apartment to add color to the picture frames above the bed (each were $1 from the dollar store)! We painted the bedroom a warm tan color and added a floating storage unit to the wall next to the bed to hold clothes and serve as a nightstand.

Our bed also has 4 drawers underneath it for additional clothing storage.

Notice the Venetian blinds in this room too (we observed some neighbors observing us . . . these are necessary)

Richard constructed this cute necklace / clutch holder for me! It hangs above our door and reduces clutter in our room!

And that is how we live in 450 square feet! It has been, and still is, a fun adventure!

Alaskan Cruise 2012

About a year and a half ago, we were discussing traveling with Richard’s best friend, Wesley, and his wife, Ashley. We told them about our plan to hit all 50 states and that Alaska was on our list for 2012! We found out that Alaska was on their “must-see” list too! Thus, the planning began. We have anxiously been counting down the months until our Alaskan cruise in Sept 2012. Since the trip was a day after our 4 year anniversary – we continued the celebration by arriving a night early in one of our favorite places – Seattle (you can never celebrate too much, right?)! The trip was a blast and beyond gorgeous. Our favorite part of the trip was accomplishing rock climbing in Skagway. Most. Difficult. Thing.…ever! So fun! We also loved chatting with the tour guides in each city along the way and hearing their crazy stories on how they ended up living/working in Alaska. One guy left Seattle after to college to backpack through Alaska with a buddy. He was in for a surprise.  His crazy adventures included: a whale overturning his canoe, a wave slamming him into the rocks and splitting his canoe in half, falling into the water (42 degrees) and having to swim to shore, his friend getting extremely sick…. and the list goes on. Also, Alaskans are required to purchase life flight insurance ($126/year) in case they have to be taken to the hospital in Seattle. One life flight is $86,000 and the Alaska hospitals are only level one (very minor things). Your life flight insurance is only good for one flight a year. Ekk!

Alaska!

Seattle, Washington

All Aboard! Leaving Seattle on our cruise ship!
Gorgeous view at dinner!

Elliott's

Yum!

Our cruise ship!

Highlights: The Alexis Hotel, Elliott’s Oyster House, The Bookstore Bar, Pike Place Market, Café Campagne; Richard also enjoyed a great 8 mile jog through Seattle in the early morning.

All Aboard! NCL Cruise Lines
Highlights: Rockwall Climbing Wall (on top of the ship), Basketball, Casino at Sea, Wine Lovers – The Musical, Whiskey Tasting, Ping Pong, Dominos, Bowling, Encore! (Broadway shows), The Not-so-Newlyweds Game, Liars Club Game, Second City, Food, Food and More Food

We are on a boat!

All this fresh sushi was a total of $24 for 4 people...insane!
Cupcake decorating on the ship
(I totally didn't realize it was a little kids activity before dragging everyone along)!
Rock wall climbing on top of the cruise ship.
Random: We were super excited to see the Second City traveling comedy troop twice on our ship! We originally saw Second City in Chicago and loved it! All the big comedians come from Second City (i.e., Steve Carell, Tina Fey, John Belushi, Chris Farley, and the list goes on and on).

Juneau, Alaska
Highlights: Mendenhall Glacier, Salmon Hatchery, Salmon Bake, Red Dog Saloon

Random: Salmon swim around the world only to come back to the exact same water they were born to spawn (weeks before they die). Where can I get a GPS like that? JAlso, the Mendenhall Glacier is the most accessible glacier in the world and recedes at a rate of 150 feet a year. Did you know that “Juneau” that gets an average of 100 inches of rain a year?!

The cute cub...we didn't see. Ashley and Wes got to see it...
but we missed it b/c I had to go to the bathroom. Figures!

On the bus after the Salmon Bake!

Salmon Bake...yum!!!!!!

Waterfalls during dinner!

Our Alaskan beers - brewed in Alaska!
Super windy haha

Loved our animals on the cruise ship.
Mendenhall Glacier...bears, oh my!
Skagway, Alaska
Highlights: Rock Climbing and Rappelling (on a mountain!), The Bonanza Bar

Random: Our tour guide looked just like Joseph Gordon Levitt! We learned that several of the tour guide companies offer internships and summer jobs for college credit (recruiting all over the US). Several of the tour guides were gaining degrees in recreation or parks – some were there just for an adventure!

Richard was such a fast climber!

I am actually begging the guide to let me down here...he kept telling me no.
LOL I made it to the top, not by choice.

So scary!

Isn't this funny? They had a ton of Texas jokes during the trip.

Lunch in town - seafood was awesome!

Richard was beyond happy to watch the Dallas Cowboys games on the trip.
He only had to beg the staff for 2 days to play it...it worked! Check out the screen!

Glacier Bay, Alaska
Highlights: Massages, Glacier Bay, Brazilian Steakhouse, Wine - The Musical

Random: Huge chunks of ice randomly fall off of the glacier (which can only be viewed from the cruise ship) – it’s called calving. When the ice falls in the water, it sounds like a huge thunderstorm or a wave of machine-gun fire (however, it is delayed so it is hard to see the ice falling before the sound).
Couple's Massage - great way to start the morning.
Glacier Bay

Glacier Bay + Us!

Hot chocolate and Glacier Bay

Celebrating Wesley's 27th birthday on the ship at a Brazilian Steakhouse!

Wine - The Musical
Wine Tasting + A Musical = So Fun!

Ketchikan, Alaksa
Highlights: Duck Boat Tour, Crab Cracker Seafood Bar

Random: There is a street called Married Man’s Trail. In the early 1900’s, all roads led to the downtown area, known for its brothels. If you were a married man just trying to get into town for other business – you would not want rumor to spread since it was assumed that all men traveling these roads were headed to the brothels. Thus, Married Man’s Trail was created.

Quack!

Ketchikan was gorgeous!

Hanging out in our stateroom on the ship.

Bowling on the ship!

Victoria, B.C. – Eh?
Highlights: Downtown Victoria, B.C., Wharfside Seafood Grill

Mini-Donuts! SO yummy!

Random: People rave about the mini donuts in Canada! They were very good! We also saw Darth Vader playing a violin on the street…definitely a new one. Richard purchased sour candy (the kind you fill up in a bag) at the 711 and you have to count how many pieces of candy before you purchase (i.e. 10 pieces X 5 cents = 50 cents). It was a very charming place!

We only have 7 more states to visit!
